1999 Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate, designed by Svend Vestergaard, has the title The Sleigh Ride. Royal Copenhagen’s Christmas plate from 1999 is entitled The sleigh ride. The motif of the Christmas tree being driven home takes its inspiration from the centuries-old tradition of decorating and placing candles on a fir tree for Christmas. Before the Christmas tree gained a footing as a Christmas tradition, a parallel exist- ed which arose in Sweden and Germany around the year 1100. According to this custom, a number of garlands of wintergreen or ivy were hung on a stake and then decorated with glazed cookies, apples and festoons of dried rasins and plums. The Christmas pyramids were quite popular all the way up to the 1800’s, but gradually found a successor in the Christmas tree, which had then become popular in most of Europe.
