Lighting The Candles 1938, Bing & Grondahl Christmas Plate

1938 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate, designed by Immanuel Tjerne, has the title Lighting the Candles. Bing & Grondahl’s Christmas plate from 1938 depicts a map of Denmark, and this plate is one of the most original. The lit candles on top of Jutland and Sealand symbolize the candles worn in a garland by the Lucia bride during the Lucia prosession. The Lucia tradition came from Sweden, and is held on December 13th, which was earlier considered to be the shortest day of the year.
